The creation of Society car #31 arose from the modeling committee’s desire to offer another suitable gondola for a GM&O prototype, and offer more cars from a predecessor road.  The Intermountain Railway model of the USRA design composite gondola fit extremely well on both counts.  The car being 100% correct for the chosen GM&O series, as well as the choice given for either a revenue or MOW model, ensured the project would sell quite well.

The lesser known white paint scheme for the Merchants Despatch Transportation 9000 series 40 ft. steel reefers which the GM&O leased for banana loading service were perfectly represented by this Athearn model. 

As a supplemental offering for persons wishing to have non-leased versions of this car, the Society produced a small number of sets with covered up routing instructions, and only the MDT logo on the left side.  Also included with the supplemental sets were decals for the New York Central, so that one or more cars could display the NYC logo on the right with appropriate routing information, once added.

The opportunity to use a quantity of discontinued Front Range Products 40' boxcars prompted this offering of 24000 series cars with specific details and differing paint schemes.  Correct door and ladder parts were included with the kits, along with a detailed data sheet (see PDF at right).
